Build-out line explained
The build-out line is a line across the field about a third of the way from each end line in US Soccer 7v7 games (U9-U10) that forces defenders back when the goalkeeper has the ball, so young teams learn to play out of the back with short passes rather than long punts.
How the build-out line works
- Goalkeeper collects the ball or a goal kick is set.
- Opposing team retreats behind the build-out line.
- GK plays the ball with a throw, roll, or pass (no punt).
- Once the ball is played and a teammate touches it, opponents can cross the line and press.
Why US Soccer added it
Before the build-out line, U9-U10 games often turned into GKs punting and both teams chasing. The best athlete wins every ball, and no one learns to play. The build-out line gives the possession team 3-5 seconds to make a plan and a short pass - the exact skill that separates good U13+ teams.
Coach and parent tips
- Teach the GK to look for the outside back on the same side as the ball.
- Practice with a 30-second rule at training: only short passes for the first 30 seconds after every GK possession.
- Praise a completed 3-pass sequence out of the back more than a 40-yard clearance.
Frequently asked questions
What is the build-out line in youth soccer?+
The build-out line is a line across the field about a third of the way from each end line in 7v7 soccer (U9-U10). When the goalkeeper has the ball, the opposing team must retreat behind this line until the ball is put back in play.
At what age does the build-out line apply?+
The build-out line applies to US Soccer 7v7 games at U9 and U10. It does not apply at 4v4 (U6-U8) or from 9v9 onward (U11+).
What is the purpose of the build-out line?+
It gives young players time and space to play the ball out of the back with short passes, instead of the goalkeeper punting long. This teaches possession-based soccer at the age when technique is being formed.
Can the goalkeeper punt the ball in 7v7?+
No. US Soccer 7v7 rules eliminate punting and drop-kicking. The goalkeeper must roll, throw, or pass the ball into play.
Can attackers cross the build-out line before the ball is played?+
No. Attackers must stay behind the line until the goalkeeper releases the ball or a defender receives a pass. Crossing early results in a rebuild.
Is there offside at the build-out line?+
For US Soccer 7v7, the build-out line acts as the offside line during a goal kick or goalkeeper release - a player past the line can be judged offside on the first pass forward.
