What happens on an accidental U11 header

The referee awards an indirect free kick to the opposing team from the spot of the header (or on the goal-area line if it occurred inside the goal area).

Introducing heading at U13

  1. Start with balloons or light foam balls.
  2. Progress to soft plastic balls, then under-inflated size 4.
  3. Coach the technique first: eyes open, mouth closed, contact with the forehead, drive the ball with the neck.
  4. Limit to 10 headers per session for the first month.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can kids head the ball in soccer?+
US Soccer prohibits heading in games and practice for players aged 10 and under (through U11). Limited heading practice is introduced at U12, and full match heading is permitted from U13 onward.
Why is heading banned in youth soccer?+
The ban follows a 2015 US Soccer policy responding to concerns about concussion and long-term brain injury (CTE). Younger necks and developing brains are more vulnerable to repetitive impact.
What happens if a U10 player heads the ball?+
An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team from the spot of the header. If accidental, the referee should still call it to reinforce the rule.
How much heading is allowed at U12?+
US Soccer permits a maximum of 30 minutes of heading training per week at U12, with no more than 15-20 headers per player per session, and no heading in games.
Do the heading rules apply to AYSO and US Club Soccer?+
Yes. AYSO, US Club Soccer, and US Youth Soccer all follow the US Soccer heading policy. High school and Canada Soccer may vary - check your local rules.
Is heading allowed in indoor youth soccer?+
Most indoor leagues follow the same US Soccer heading restrictions. Some recreational indoor programs are looser - ask before signing up.
