FG vs AG vs turf soccer cleats
Soccer cleats come in three stud types: firm-ground (FG) with long molded studs for natural grass, artificial-ground (AG) with shorter numerous studs for 3G/4G synthetic turf, and turf (TF) shoes with tiny rubber nubs for older astroturf or hard packed surfaces.
Quick reference
| Surface | Best cleat | Also OK | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural grass, dry | FG | AG | SG (metal) |
| Natural grass, wet/muddy | SG | FG | TF |
| 3G/4G modern turf | AG | TF, FG (occasional) | Metal SG |
| Old astroturf, hard ground | TF | AG | FG |
| Indoor court / futsal | IN (indoor) | - | Any stud |
What FG, AG, TF actually mean
- FG (Firm Ground): 12-13 molded studs, medium length. Standard grass cleat.
- AG (Artificial Ground): 20-30 shorter studs distributed across the sole. Reduces knee stress on rubber-crumb turf.
- TF (Turf): Many small rubber nubs. Designed for older-generation astroturf or hard-packed dirt.
- SG (Soft Ground): Metal or hybrid studs, some removable. For wet natural grass only.
- IN (Indoor): Flat gum-rubber sole. Gym floors and futsal.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between FG, AG, and turf soccer cleats?+
FG (firm ground) cleats have long molded studs for natural grass. AG (artificial grass) cleats have shorter, more numerous studs designed for modern 3G/4G turf. Turf (TF) shoes have small rubber nubs for old-style astroturf or hard-packed surfaces.
Can you wear FG cleats on turf?+
It's not recommended. FG studs get stuck in modern turf and can cause knee and ankle injuries. Manufacturer warranties are voided when FG cleats are worn on turf.
What's the difference between turf shoes and indoor soccer shoes?+
Turf shoes have small rubber studs for outdoor turf and hard surfaces. Indoor soccer shoes have flat gum-rubber soles designed for polished gym floors and futsal courts.
Which cleats should a young player buy first?+
Molded FG cleats work on 90% of youth fields (mostly grass). If your child plays regularly on turf, add TF turf shoes as their second pair.
Are AG cleats worth the extra cost?+
For players who train on modern 3G/4G turf 3+ times per week, yes. Otherwise a good FG cleat handles turf occasionally without significant issues.
